Zimbabwe Takes Bold Step Toward Strengthening Data Privacy at Victoria Falls Symposium

February 24, 2025 Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe has marked a significant milestone in data protection with the official opening of the Data Privacy Symposium yesterday, hosted by the Ministry of ICT, Postal & Courier Services in collaboration with the regulator, POTRAZ. The event, held in the picturesque setting of Victoria Falls, brought together experts, stakeholders, and government officials to discuss how to fortify data privacy in the country.

Data privacy, which refers to the control individuals and organizations have over their personal information—ranging from contact details to online behavior—has never been more vital in an increasingly interconnected world. As digital services expand, ensuring the protection of personal data has become a pressing issue, especially with the rise of online banking, government services, and mobile technologies.

In her address, Hon. Dr. T.A. Mavetera, Minister of ICT, Postal & Courier Services, underscored the importance of safeguarding digital rights and privacy for all Zimbabweans. "As technology brings us closer, it's crucial that we see privacy as a fundamental human right," she stated. She acknowledged the tremendous benefits brought by digital services, such as mobile banking and online government interactions, but also highlighted the risks, including data breaches and identity theft.

Dr. Mavetera commended the role of POTRAZ in enforcing regulations, educating the public, and training data protection officers. However, she also pointed out that challenges remain, such as the rise of sophisticated cybercrimes and gaps in digital literacy. "There is still much to be done, but we are making significant strides," she added.

The Minister also expressed her gratitude to all participants and emphasized the ongoing need for policy development, public education, and innovation. She celebrated the success of newly appointed Data Protection Officers and expressed hope for continued collaboration between academic institutions and regulatory bodies to drive progress in this critical field.

With the continued evolution of digital technologies, Zimbabwe's commitment to strengthening data privacy ensures that citizens' rights are protected while fostering an environment for innovation and trust in the digital economy.
